Our Expertise

Why Energy People Group for Nuclear Executive Search

Nuclear is unlike any other sector in the energy industry. The talent pool is small, qualification requirements are stringent, regulatory scrutiny is constant, and the consequences of the wrong hire — at any level — are severe. Finding the right person requires a recruiter who understands nuclear culture, licensing requirements, and the specific competencies the NRC and your organisation demand.

Energy People Group works exclusively in the energy sector. Our nuclear practice covers operating fleet operators, advanced reactor and SMR developers, fuel cycle companies, decommissioning specialists, and the engineering and services companies that support them. We understand the difference between a pressurised water reactor operations leader and one with boiling water reactor background — and why it matters.

We place two distinct tracks: executive and senior leadership — Plant General Manager, VP Nuclear Operations, VP Engineering, Chief Nuclear Officer, VP Regulatory Affairs — and senior technical specialists — the licensed reactor operators, nuclear engineers, health physics professionals, and I&C specialists who are irreplaceable at the operational level.

Nuclear professionals do not respond to job postings. The most qualified people in this sector are deeply embedded in their organisations and will consider a move only if it is presented by someone who understands the sector and can represent the opportunity with credibility.

Operating Fleet

Legacy PWR, BWR & CANDU Operations

Plant General Managers, VP Nuclear Operations, Chief Nuclear Officers, and senior technical leaders for operating nuclear power plants across the US fleet.

SMR & Advanced Reactors

New Build, SMR & Gen IV Development

Executive and technical leadership for small modular reactor developers and advanced reactor programmes — from pre-licensing through construction and commissioning.

Fuel Cycle & Services

Fuel, Decommissioning & Nuclear Services

Senior leadership and technical specialists for uranium enrichment, fuel fabrication, decommissioning projects, and nuclear engineering services companies.

Roles We Place

Senior Nuclear Positions We Recruit For

We place across two tracks: executive and senior leadership (C-suite through Plant GM) and senior technical specialists — the nuclear engineers, health physicists, and I&C professionals whose qualifications and experience cannot be approximated.

Executive & Plant Leadership

  • Chief Nuclear Officer (CNO)
  • Plant General Manager (PGM)
  • VP Nuclear Operations
  • VP Nuclear Engineering
  • VP Regulatory Affairs (Nuclear)
  • VP Nuclear Safety / Chief Nuclear Safety Officer
  • CFO — Nuclear Business Unit
  • General Counsel (Nuclear)
  • VP Human Performance

Operations & Engineering

  • Director — Nuclear Operations
  • Director — Nuclear Engineering
  • Director — Maintenance
  • Director — Work Management
  • Director — Outage Management
  • Director — Training
  • Shift Manager / Senior Reactor Operator
  • Director — Nuclear Security

Regulatory & Safety

  • Director — Nuclear Regulatory Affairs
  • Director — Nuclear Licensing
  • Director — Environmental Qualification
  • Director — Quality Assurance
  • Director — Safety Analysis
  • Director — Emergency Preparedness
  • Director — Corrective Action Programme

Senior Technical Specialists

  • Senior Reactor / Nuclear Engineer
  • Senior Health Physics Specialist
  • Senior I&C Engineer
  • Senior Electrical Engineer — Nuclear
  • Senior Mechanical Engineer — Nuclear
  • Senior Thermal Hydraulics Engineer
  • Senior Reactor Operator (Licensed)
  • Senior Fuel Performance Engineer
  • Senior Probabilistic Risk Analyst (PRA)

A note on senior technical roles: In nuclear, a senior reactor engineer or health physics professional with 20 years of experience is not interchangeable with a recent hire — the depth of knowledge, qualifications, and operational judgement are categorically different. We treat every technical search with the same rigour as a CNO or Plant GM placement, because in nuclear, the stakes at every level are the same.

Retained vs. Contingency

Why Retained Search Produces Better Nuclear Hires

For senior roles — where the wrong hire costs more than the search fee by a factor of ten — the approach matters as much as the outcome.

Retained Search (EPG)

Exclusive. Proactive. Thorough.

  • Full market mapping — we approach candidates who aren’t looking
  • Exclusive engagement — our full attention on your search
  • Thorough candidate qualification before presentation
  • Confidential process — protects both company and candidate
  • Regular progress updates and transparent reporting
  • Negotiation and offer management support
Contingency / Job Board

Reactive. Competitive. Inconsistent.

  • Limited to candidates already in market or on databases
  • Multiple firms working same search — attention is divided
  • Speed incentivised over quality of fit
  • Candidate confidentiality difficult to protect
  • Limited reporting and process visibility
  • Less effective for senior or technical niche roles

Common Questions

Nuclear Executive Search — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions companies and candidates most commonly ask about retained nuclear search.

Nuclear is the most demanding sector in energy for talent acquisition. The candidate pool is small, qualification and licensing requirements are stringent, NRC oversight is constant, and nuclear culture — human performance, procedural adherence, safety-first leadership — requires a very specific mindset that not every energy executive possesses. A generalist recruiter will not understand these requirements or have the credibility to approach candidates in this world. Energy People Group works exclusively in energy, and our nuclear practice is built on genuine sector relationships.
We place across the full nuclear leadership structure — Chief Nuclear Officer, Plant General Manager, VP Nuclear Operations, VP Engineering, VP Regulatory Affairs, VP Safety, and Director-level roles across operations, maintenance, outage management, training, and regulatory affairs. We also place senior technical specialists including nuclear engineers, health physicists, I&C engineers, and probabilistic risk analysts.
A typical retained nuclear executive search takes between 10 and 16 weeks — somewhat longer than other sectors due to the qualification verification required, the smaller candidate pool, and the more complex offer and clearance process. We provide detailed progress updates throughout.
Yes. Confidentiality is non-negotiable and particularly important in a sector as small and interconnected as nuclear. When a professional registers their profile, their identity is never shared with any client without explicit prior consent. Nuclear professionals can register knowing that their current employer will not be informed.
Yes. We conduct nuclear executive searches nationally across operating fleet sites, SMR development programmes, fuel cycle companies, decommissioning projects, and nuclear engineering services firms throughout the US.
Energy People Group operates on a retained basis — fees are paid by the client in structured milestones. Candidates are never charged. Given the additional rigour required for nuclear searches, we discuss timeline and process expectations thoroughly during the initial scoping call.
The most qualified nuclear professionals are not on job boards. They are embedded in operating plants, development programmes, or regulatory processes, and they are highly selective about who they speak with. Our exclusive energy sector focus and genuine nuclear network means we can reach and represent candidates who simply will not engage with a generalist recruiter.
