Private Equity Fuels Permian Basin Growth as New Height Energy Closes Midland Acquisition

New Height Energy, LLC announced on April 1, 2026, the closing of a transformative acquisition of producing oil and gas assets in the Midland Basin, pushing the Houston-based operator’s pro forma net production past 5,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The transaction, backed by family-office sponsors Spence & Co. and JWJ & Company alongside Texas Capital and new equity investors, underscores an accelerating pattern of private-equity-backed deal activity in the Permian Basin during the first quarter of 2026.

The Midland Basin continues to attract capital from private sponsors seeking exposure to some of the lowest-cost hydrocarbon production in North America. New Height Energy, founded in 2021 by Stuart Spence and Jeff Wilhelm, has pursued a disciplined growth strategy built on acquiring high-quality producing assets and optimizing operations with efficient capital deployment.

The deal arrives at a time when energy-focused private equity firms are deploying record levels of dry powder accumulated during a cautious 2024 and early 2025 fundraising cycle. Quantum Energy Partners held a $5.58 billion final close on its eighth flagship fund in late 2024 and has signaled plans for a $4.5 billion ninth fund, while EnCap Investments closed a $5.25 billion vehicle and NGP Energy Capital wrapped Fund XIII at $2.3 billion. These funds, combined with a growing appetite for mid-cap bolt-on transactions, have created favorable conditions for operators like New Height Energy to assemble meaningful asset positions in the Permian.

New Height Energy’s Midland Basin assets contribute to a production base that now exceeds 5,000 BOE/d, a significant threshold for a privately held operator pursuing scale in one of the most competitive plays in North America. TenOaks Energy Advisors served as financial advisor, with Sidley Austin LLP providing legal counsel on the equity commitments and reserve-based lending facility.

The transaction is part of a broader pattern. In February 2026, Caturus Energy, the integrated natural gas platform backed by Kimmeridge Energy Management and Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Energy, agreed to acquire SM Energy’s Galvan Ranch assets in Webb County, Texas, for $950 million. That deal added approximately 60,000 net acres and 260 producing wells to Caturus’s Gulf Coast portfolio, bringing total holdings to more than 275,000 net acres with over 15 years of premium drilling inventory. Separately, EnCap Flatrock Midstream has been exploring a potential sale of gas pipeline operator Momentum Midstream in a deal that could value the company at more than $5 billion, according to Bloomberg reporting.

These transactions collectively signal that private equity capital is flowing back into Texas energy assets across the upstream and midstream value chain, driven by sustained basin economics and long-term demand visibility for natural gas and associated liquids.

A rising tide of PE-backed acquisitions in the Permian Basin and across South Texas is expected to generate incremental demand for operational and technical talent. Operators scaling production through acquisition typically require experienced reservoir engineers, production engineers, and completions specialists to integrate new assets and optimize well performance.

The Caturus acquisition of Galvan Ranch, with its 260 producing wells and significant undeveloped acreage, may drive demand for drilling engineers, land professionals, and regulatory compliance specialists familiar with the Eagle Ford and Austin Chalk formations. Similarly, if the Momentum Midstream sale proceeds, the acquiring entity would likely need pipeline operations managers, SCADA technicians, and midstream commercial professionals to manage 4,000 miles of gas gathering and transportation infrastructure.

At the management level, PE-backed portfolio companies navigating rapid growth through acquisitions often seek seasoned finance professionals with experience in reserve-based lending, A&D analysis, and post-merger integration. Developments of this scale may increase demand for experienced engineers and operational specialists in the coming months.

Industry observers will be watching several developments in the coming quarters. The closing of the Caturus-SM Energy Galvan Ranch transaction, expected in Q2 2026, will test whether PE-backed platforms can efficiently integrate large-scale gassy assets into vertically integrated LNG supply chains. Caturus recently signed a 20-year LNG offtake agreement with Aramco Trading Americas, suggesting the company’s well-to-water strategy is gaining commercial traction.

The potential Momentum Midstream sale, if consummated, would rank among the largest midstream PE exits in recent years and could set valuation benchmarks for gas gathering and processing assets in the current interest rate environment. Meanwhile, fund managers including Quantum, EnCap, and NGP continue to evaluate upstream and infrastructure opportunities in the Permian, Eagle Ford, and Haynesville basins.

With commodity prices stabilizing and LNG export capacity expanding along the Gulf Coast, 2026 is positioned to be a breakout year for private-equity-driven energy M&A. Whether that momentum sustains will depend on the trajectory of oil and gas prices, regulatory clarity on federal permitting, and the ability of PE-backed operators to demonstrate disciplined returns to their limited partners.
