Battalion Oil Acquires 7,090 Acres in Permian’s Delaware Basin, Adding 30 Drilling Locations

Battalion Oil Corp. has agreed to acquire 7,090 net acres in Ward County, Texas, expanding its Monument Draw position in the Delaware Basin through an all-stock transaction with RoadRunner Resource Holding LLC, the successor entity to Sundown Energy LP. The deal, announced March 10, 2026, adds approximately 30 drillable locations targeting the Wolfcamp A, Wolfcamp B, and 3rd Bone Spring formations — three of the most productive stacked-pay intervals in the Permian Basin — and extends a development footprint that Battalion has operated continuously for several years.

The Permian Basin, which spans West Texas and southeastern New Mexico, remains the most actively developed oil and gas play in North America. The U.S. Energy Information Administration projects U.S. crude oil production to average 13.6 million barrels per day in 2026 and rise to 13.8 million barrels per day in 2027 — figures underpinned largely by continued Permian output growth. Against that backdrop, acreage adjacency has become a competitive priority for independent operators, as contiguous lease blocks reduce per-well infrastructure costs and enable efficient sequential drilling programs.

Battalion’s Monument Draw position in Ward County has been a focal point of the company’s Delaware Basin development strategy. The acquired acreage directly adjoins Battalion’s existing position, substantially enlarging the company’s continuous operational footprint. Notably, Battalion previously operated and drilled on this exact acreage during a prior joint venture arrangement with Sundown Energy — giving the company direct subsurface knowledge of the formations and familiarity with local infrastructure conditions that reduces technical and execution risk associated with the transaction.

The transaction is structured entirely in stock: Battalion will issue 485,000 shares of its common stock to RoadRunner Resource Holding in exchange for the 7,090-acre asset package. The effective date is March 1, 2026, with closing subject to customary conditions, closing adjustments, registration rights, and regulatory approvals. No cash consideration is involved, preserving Battalion’s liquidity position as it advances its 2026 capital program.

The acquisition is expected to add approximately 30 net well locations targeting three producing zones — the Wolfcamp A, Wolfcamp B, and 3rd Bone Spring — all well-characterized pay intervals with established production history across the Monument Draw area. The Delaware Basin’s Wolfcamp and Bone Spring formations collectively represent the highest-density drilled stacked pay in the Permian, and prior production from this specific acreage provides data to support development planning and reserve bookings.

The package also includes Sundown’s ownership interest in an existing Battalion-operated well on the acreage, contributing an estimated $700,000 in net present value at a 10% discount rate. An existing sour gas treating agreement between Battalion and Targa Resources means midstream infrastructure for handling the acreage’s produced gas stream is already contracted and in place — a meaningful logistical advantage in a basin where new midstream capacity agreements can introduce scheduling uncertainty for independent operators.

Bolt-on acquisitions that deepen an operator’s existing development position — particularly where subsurface and infrastructure familiarity already exist — tend to translate into incremental rather than transformative workforce demands. At Monument Draw, the more immediate professional requirements are likely to involve subsurface integration work, including reservoir characterization of the newly acquired acreage and updating drilling schedules to incorporate 30 new well locations into a multi-year capital plan.

Over a longer horizon, a drilling inventory of this scale supports sustained demand for completions engineers, production engineers, and field operations supervisors familiar with multi-zone Delaware Basin completions. The Wolfcamp and Bone Spring stacked-pay environment also creates ongoing work for petrophysicists and geoscience professionals tasked with optimizing completion designs across distinct formation intervals. Environmental compliance and produced water management functions are increasingly central to Delaware Basin operations, given the region’s elevated water-to-oil ratios and evolving state and federal regulatory frameworks.

Land and legal professionals will be engaged through the closing process and in managing the expanded acreage position post-close. As regulatory approval timelines can affect well permit scheduling, government affairs and regulatory liaison capacity may also see incremental demand.

Battalion has not disclosed a closing timeline for the transaction. Industry observers will watch the company’s 2026 capital program guidance for signals about how quickly the newly acquired locations are expected to enter the active drilling schedule. Given the acreage’s direct adjacency to existing Monument Draw operations and the absence of new midstream requirements, integration timelines are likely to be shorter than a comparable greenfield position.

The deal reflects a broader pattern taking shape across the Permian: independent operators with established core positions are pursuing smaller, adjacency-focused acquisitions to extend drilling runway without the balance sheet complexity of larger platform transactions. As major Permian operators have moved toward scale through large consolidations in recent years, mid-cap independents have concentrated on optimizing existing positions through targeted bolt-ons of the kind Battalion has executed at Monument Draw.

The EIA’s production outlook suggests the operating environment for Permian independents remains supportive through the near term, with U.S. crude output projected to climb steadily through 2027. The trajectory of oil prices — influenced in part by ongoing Middle East supply disruptions — will remain a key variable in how aggressively operators elect to accelerate drilling programs on newly acquired inventory.
